Almighty and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being, You created us for Yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they find rest in You. Grant to us such faithfulness of heart and strength of purpose that nothing may hinder us from seeking and knowing Your will, and no weakness from doing it.  In Your life may we see life clearly and in Your service may we find fulfillment, joy and blessing but most of all, be a means of Your grace, mercy, and love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. LOVING MINISTRIES EVENT: NOVEMBER 4TH

Please mark your calendars for an important event coming soon in the life of our church. On November 4, following a delicious Wednesday Niter meal, we will celebrate the Loving Ministries (the theme of the evening) for which our church is known throughout the community. The celebration will include music, skits, testimonials, introductions of staff, and much more in an effort to better communicate to our congregation the many programs and activities (Loving Ministries) that are going on in God’s church. Because we have four separate worship services in which most of us seldom get to see each other, this is an opportunity to enjoy an evening together and to better see the wonderful ministries in our church.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

Sunday, October 18, at 7:00 pm the Leadership council will meet in the Fellowship Hall.

PARENTS NEEDED TO HELP WITH KOINONIA CAFÉ IN NOVEMBER

We had a great Opening Night in Koinonia Café, and we thank the nine children and youth who came for the activities, and the dozen adults who visited to see our new room.  We made our mark on the cabinet doors with our hand prints, found our “Bible partners” and did impromptu skits to tell their stories, designed our own name badges, and played ping pong too!  Children’s and youth ministry leaders have planned the activities through October, but we would like parents to take this on in November.  Parents can work on teams, take a month, take a week, whatever it takes to plan a few simple Bible devotional activities, provide general supervision of the children, and assist kids needing help with their homework.  Times are 6:30-8:30 pm on Wednesdays.  Please call the church office to indicate when you can help next month.  (NOTE:  We still need about $900 to purchase a few remaining furniture needs.)

Our Opening Night Brought some added interest for ministry!  Kids and youth – Would you like to be part of your own Drama Club?  Adults – would you be interested in a Pilates class?  We’ve got a couple adults interested in taking the lead on these – we just need to know if we’ve got enough interest to get it started.  Please call the church office and ask for Debbie Shope at 483-5273.

WARM, WELCOMING, WELLNESS WEDNESDAY’S meal will be heart healthy in celebration of Jim's one year anniversary from by-pass surgery.  Menu: Baked Fish and Baked Chicken, Broccoli, Hush Puppies, Rolls, and Dessert.     (Menu is always subject to change)

LOVING MINISTRIES

How Does God Work in the World?

We truly believe in God’s heart of love.  We truly believe God cares for any and all of God’s people, that God hears human cries and hurt.  We truly believe that God in Christ is an Emmanuel God, ever present and working in the world.  A vital question: how does God work in the world?  Of course, any way God so chooses.  Today we remember God’s call to Moses, to Paul, and to us.

Every Christian is “a letter from Christ” to the world, “written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,” written,”not on stone tablets but in their living hearts.”(2 Cor. 3:2-3)

Paul reminds us that our letter is written 'on tablets of human hearts'.   Our church, through our Every Member in Ministry (EMIM) process gives us an opportunity to examine our lives and what is in the content of the 'letter' we are sending to others, and to make intentional choices about the message we want to send.   By giving of ourselves, using our “letter,” we are sharing the Kingdom life that we experience through God's grace.

Next Sunday is Laity Sunday – the day on which we remember our laity and the gifts they use in the church.  It is a day that we’ve made Every Member in Ministry (EMIM) packets available for each church member and for our “adopted” friends.  No matter how young or old, strong or week, rich or poor you may be, there is still a special purpose that God has “written on your heart,” and one that will not only impact your life but others.

Please take your packet and pray about where God has called you to serve in 2010.  You will notice that we’ve greatly simplified the process for you this year.  Instead of checking a box, you will have the opportunity to respond to God by writing down where you want to serve.  The card is in two parts – the top portion will go to the coordinators of your designated ministry areas; the bottom portion you will place in the envelope provided.  You may write whatever you want on this and seal it – this is your commitment to God, and it will not be viewed by others in the church.

On Sunday, November 8 – Commitment Sunday, you will have an opportunity to bringing your “letter” to place on the altar for God, during a Combined Worship Service at 10:00 am in the Family Life Center.

It is such a privilege to do Christ’s work!  Please pray about what God has written on your heart, and how you will serve in the church in the coming year.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR LUCY RYDELL WEBSTER

A Memorial Service for Lucy Rydell Webster, our longtime faithful member, will be this coming Thursday, October 15, at 11:00 am in the Sanctuary.  Lucy’s many Church and community friends will want to attend.

CHAPEL COMMUNION

We are renewing the practice of weekly communion with one of the pastors officiating. We will meet in the Chapel every Sunday at 10:50 am, serving of communion will continue until 11:30 with the exception of the first Sunday when we celebrate communion at all services. Please join us.

KERN CHURCH IN PRAYER

Daily   7am, 11 am, 7 pm, 11 pm

Our people are invited to join together in prayer.  We are invited to come to the Prayer Room if in the Church building.

“and they devoted themselves … to the prayers” (Acts 2:42)

TRUNK OR TREAT

Yes, we are having Trunk or Treat this year!  October 31 at 4:30-6:00 pm we will trick or treat in our trunks. If you would like to bring your decorated car, then please let us know by calling the church office and leaving a message for me(Tyler Neas). This year is going to be a little different. Trunk or Treat will only be an outside event this year. We are asking you to please help us by bringing extra candy. You may put your goodies in the Library anytime through October 31. Please come and have a great time trick or treating, with a side cup of cocoa.

If you would like to help set up, please let Tyler know by calling the church office 865-483-5273.

Grace and Peace,

Tyler Neas Kern UMC Youth Director

EMIM Pathways

There are many pathways to ministry.  Here are some of the main ones you will find at Kern:

The Call:  Often the Holy Spirit opens our eyes and makes us aware of a need, and that is God's invitation to us to get involved―sometimes even in our weakness.  When we take a step in obedience, remain connected (yoked) to Him, then He will supply what we need to overcome our weakness.  He will work through us, and He will receive the glory.

Spiritual Gifts:  God has given each of us gifts of the Spirit, areas where we are naturally talented and eager to serve—for example, the gifted singer in the choir, or the teacher in the Sunday School classroom.  There are many types of spiritual gifts, and you probably have many you never realized you had!  Kern offers Spiritual Gifts classes to help you identify these and examine where God may be calling you to use them.

Strength Finder:  Aside from your spiritual gifts, you have certain inborn characteristics that make you a good “fit” for specific kinds of ministries.  Kern offers Strength Finder classes to help you discover your inborn characteristics and how to maximize your potential for serving in ministry and all that you do.

The “Ping” (a modern term for the still, small voice):  Most of us will probably never have that burning bush experience, but God is still speaking to us.  Maybe a story on the news moves you, or you feel called to read a certain book, or visit someone you haven’t seen in a while.  Your prayer time may lead you in a certain direction—God can speak in countless ways, at any time.  The key is to be “tuned in” and ready to hear these calls which can easily be drowned out with everyday concerns.  Kern offers Bible studies, Sunday School classes, and prayer breakfasts, which will bring you closer to God and keep you ready to hear that ping.

The Group Experience:  Sometimes a ministry opportunity comes out of your participation in a group with others.  It may not have been a ministry you felt a personal call to, but you are blessed to serve in a meaningful way.  This could lead to a personal call in this area, or may be a means of your doing God’s work through your association with others.  There are many opportunities for group fellowship and service here at Kern, both short-term studies and one-time events and ongoing groups such as cell groups, men’s and women’s groups, and Youth.

Stewardship:  The giving of our financial and material gifts to do God’s work.  For the church to continue to do God’s work, each of us must examine how God is calling us to offer our financial and material support.  The congregation is kept up-to-date on the ministries of the church and how we are meeting our financial commitments throughout the year, so that each of us can pray over and discern how God is leading us in this area.

Holy Spirit:  In and around all these areas, we have the guidance and support of the Holy Spirit.  Whether we need support in serving in the ministries we are called to, guidance in discerning what ministries we are called to, or are just downright perplexed about the whole thing, the Holy Spirit is there to comfort and guide us.  You may feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in many ways—through prayer, Scripture, and also through the caring of others.  Along with Kern’s pastor and staff, the Congregational Care Team is ready and eager to help with any needs you may have and the Prayer Chain is always on the job.  The Holy Spirit may even be leading you to join one or both of these groups.

What a privilege and blessing it is to serve, and to be a letter from Christ!
